You shouldn’t take what people say too literally. People often mean something other than what they say – something you can really use to your advantage of if you’re perceptive.
Two engineering students ran into each other when going across campus. One of them noticed that the other one was riding a brand new bicycle. He waved him over and asked, “Hey, where did you get such a great bike?”
The second engineer replied, “Carol gave it to me.”
“Carol gave it to you?!? I knew she was into you, but this is just ridiculous!”
“Well,” the other engineering student said, “yesterday I was walking along, minding my own business, when beautiful Carol rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes until she was stark naked and said, ‘Take what you want!’ So I took the bike and left!”
The second engineer nodded approvingly, “Good choice; her clothes probably wouldn’t have fit you.”
