An Alberta farmer drove to his neighbor’s house in his pickup. He stepped out of the truck, walked up to the front door with a deliberate stride, and knocked firmly. Soon the door was opened by a small boy, about 9 years old.
“Is your dad home?” the farmer asked.
“No, he isn’t,” the boy replied, “he went to town.”
“Okay, is your mom home then?”
“No, she went with dad to town.”
“I see. Then maybe your brother John is home?”
“Nah, he went with mom and dad to town.”
The man stood there mumbling for a while, shifting to and fro with an air of indecisiveness.
“Is there anything I can do for you?” the boy asked. “I know where all the tools are if there’s something you want to borrow. Or I can give dad a message, if you want.”
“Well,” said the rancher uncomfortably, “it’s really important that I speak with your dad. It’s about your brother John – he’s gotten my daughter Carol pregnant.
The boy thought for a moment. “You would have to talk to Dad about that. I know he charges $500 for the bull and $100 for the hog, but I don’t know how much he charges for John.”
