We’ve all experienced seeing things that aren’t really there. Such as looking out of a window and being shocked that someone is standing right outside – when there’s really no-one there.
Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to an image or a sound by perceiving a familiar pattern where none exists.
Common examples are perceived faces or objects in cloud formations, the man in the moon and hearing indistinct voices in random noise such as from air conditioners or fans.
Sometimes it can be a bit scary, but also funny – and in some cases, absolutely hilarious.
